The Wedding Party

A presentation of the Melbourne International Film Festival MIFF Premiere Fund at CinefestOZ, in association with ScreenWest

Steve Thompson is a loveable anti-hero who, in a last desperate attempt of escaping financial ruin, agrees to marry a Russian girl seeking residency in exchange for a large sum of cash. The flaws in Steve's plan start appearing when a nosy family friend overhears the couple discussing their marriage and in no time the Thompson family is swept up in wedding fever.

The preparations for Steve's big day are set against a back-drop of the Thompson family's own relationships, from a deviant brother, to a sister with intimacy issues and parents who have recently separated due to a father's long history of infidelity.

Too late to turn back and bound by the convictions of his arrangement Steve's goal to restore his bank balance is seriously jeopardizing the one true thing in his life - his love for school teacher, Jacqui.

As the wedding draws closer, the Thompson family rallies together like never before to make what should have been a registry affair, into the world's most farcical wedding. Dresses are made and flowers are corsaged as Steve's lie takes on a life of it's own, and he is privately consumed by the fear that he has ruined his chance to be with Jacqui forever. The only question remains, will Steve leave his wedding to be with the woman he loves?
